Atomic explosion of India

A nuclear explosion occurs as a result of the rapid release of energy from an intentionally high-speed nuclear explosion. Nuclear tests are experiments carried out to determine the effective- ness, yield and explosive capability of nuclear weapons. India on May 18, 1974 conducted its first nuclear explosion in Rajasthan Smiling Buddha formally designated as Pokhran-I, was the codename given to Republic of India's first nuclear explosion that took place at the long-constructed Indian Army base, Pokhran, Test Base at Po khran municipality, Rajasthan, on 18 May 1974 at 8:05 a.m.. After a gap of 24 years, India again conduc- ted two atomic explosions on May 11th and 13th of May 1998. Operation Shakti was carried out two months after the 1998 elections at the Pokhran test site. Both explosions were successful and India emerged as a strong member among atomic power nations.

Homi. J. Baba who founded the nuclear institute of Fundamental Research in 1944. Physi- cists such as Chandrasekhara Raman and Satyen- dra Bose later went on to play an integral role in the research of nuclear weapon's technology.

After Indian independence Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru authorized the development of a nuclear programme headed by Homi J. Bhaba.
The Atomic Energy Act of 1948 focuses on peaceful development and India was heavily invol- ved in the development of the Nuclear Non-Proli- feration Treaty, but ultimately opted not to sign.

In 1967, after Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister, the work on nuclear programme was re-started with new attitude and goals. Homi Sethna, a chemical engineer, played a significant role in the development of weapon-grade pluto- nium while Ramanna designed and manufactured the whole nuclear device. Because of the sensiti- vity, the first nuclear bomb project did not employ more than 75 scientists .

On 7 September 1972 Prime Minister Indira Gandhi authorized the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) throughout its development, the device was formally called the "Peaceful Nuclear Explosive" but it was usually referred to as the Smiling Buddha. Operation Shakti was carried out two months after the 1998 elections at the Pokhran test site, and used devices designed and built over the preceding two decades.

The authority have clearly indicated that India will use its atomic power only for peaceful and defense. The radiation from nuclear purposes explosion can cause genetic mutation, radiation poisoning, and death.
